November 2017

Non-ambient X-ray Diffraction Symposium

November 8, 2017 @ 1:00 pm - November 9, 2017 @ 4:00 pm
Monteith Research Center, Room 136, 2410 Campus Shore Drive
Raleigh, NC 27695 United States

Non-ambient X-ray diffraction is a useful tool for determining phase stability, studying phase transformations, and following reaction pathways and kinetics. Practical examples include in-situ battery analysis for developing new cathode materials, understanding pharmaceutical stability with temperature and humidity, quantifying growth kinetics of nanocrystalline systems, and many more. New non-ambient chambers, faster instruments, and automatic data processing make non-ambient diffraction an ever-increasingly powerful technique. However, there are issues that can trip up the unwary, such as thermal gradients, unwanted reactions, systematic…

Raman Spectroscopy has gained much attention in the past 25 years as a material analytics and diagnostics method, often used as a complement to diffraction or electron microscopy techniques. This interest is triggered by Raman being a (mostly) non-destructive measurement that can be obtained with easy-to-use, tabletop equipment. The Raman signal is a type of inelastic scattering from molecular or crystal vibrations, and as such it is a fingerprint of the state the solid assumes. Any changes in composition, phase, mechanical…
